Cake, Carts & Carbs: The Holy Trinity of Wedding Joy

Pop the kettle on (or pour something stronger), because we need to discuss very important matters… namely cake, carts and carbs. The holy trinity of wedding joy.

Let’s begin, naturally, with cake.

The “Decorate-It-Yourself” Cake Trend

One of my absolute favourite trends right now? Couples decorating their own wedding cake.

Yes, really.

Picture it: a beautifully iced, perfectly smooth cake sitting there patiently… and then you two step forward — armed with fresh flowers, fruit, colourful macarons, a dusting of chocolate or a drizzle of something gloriously indulgent — and make it completely your own.

It’s relaxed, it’s fun, and it’s wonderfully personal. Not to mention the photos? Unreal. (A little competitive energy between the two of you is very much encouraged.)

Here in Zakynthos, it works beautifully. It leans into that laid-back, joyful atmosphere — less “please don’t touch the display” and more “this is our party.”

It also gives you a lovely little moment together before the evening celebrations properly kick off.

We haven’t had one of our couples do this just yet (it’s still emerging), but we are desperately hoping one of our 2026 weddings goes for it. If that’s you — consider this your sign. And if you need inspiration, Instagram is full of ideas…

Sweet or Savoury Carts (A Greek Wedding Essential)

Now, let’s talk carts. Because in Greece, we don’t mess about when it comes to feeding people.

Sweet or savoury carts are a brilliant addition to a destination wedding. Why? Because they keep the energy high and the guests very, very happy.

We’re talking:

  • Late-night gyros stations

  • Haribo buffets (always a hit)

  • Greek dessert carts that magically appear just when guests think they couldn’t possibly eat another bite (they can)

And let’s just take a moment for the absolute genius of an ice cream cart at a Greek wedding. In the Zakynthos sunshine, it’s not just a cute idea — it’s borderline essential.

Carts are interactive, they get people mingling, and they create those little in-between moments that make a wedding feel alive. Guests can grab something between dances, kids feel included, and nobody sneaks off early because they’re “a bit peckish.”

It’s Mediterranean hospitality at its finest.

Twisted Lemon Catering – The Daytime Heroes

If you’re planning something stylish but relaxed for the daytime, Twisted Lemon Catering absolutely delivers.

Think:

  • Beautiful deli grazing boards

  • Fresh fruit and Greek yoghurt platters (perfect in the heat)

  • Breakfast and brunch spreads for the morning-after crowd

  • Even a full Afternoon Tea, if you fancy a little British charm abroad

These options are ideal for villa weddings, bridal party mornings, or simply keeping everyone fuelled without the formality of a sit-down meal.

It feels abundant, effortless, and perfectly in tune with island life.

And the best part? It’s not just for the wedding day. Pre-wedding brunches, poolside grazing, next-day recovery feasts — all very much encouraged.

Lemon Tree Taverna (Psaropoula) – Your Pre & Post Wedding Favourite

Now let me introduce you to a firm favourite: Lemon Tree Taverna.

If you’re planning a welcome meal before the big day or a relaxed get-together afterwards, this spot is perfect. Think authentic Greek dishes, long tables, flowing wine, and that warm, easy atmosphere that makes destination weddings so special.

It’s ideal for bringing families together before the celebrations begin — or for gently recovering the day after (with excellent food, of course).

It’s About More Than Just the Meal

The joy of a wedding in Zakynthos isn’t just the ceremony — it’s the entire experience.

The welcome dinners.
The poolside brunches.
The late-night snack runs.
The unexpected second slice of cake.

Food keeps the mood buoyant, the dance floor full, and the memories delicious.

So whether you’re dreaming of decorating your own cake, planning your perfect cart line-up, or curating a full Greek feast — you know where I am.

Most likely with a clipboard in one hand… and a piece of baklava in the other.

With love (and snacks),
Lisa 💛
